Frankfurt am Main / Saarbrücken, November 17, 2020 – SVOLT Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (SVOLT), a China-based global high-tech enterprise that develops and produces lithium-ion batteries and battery systems for electric vehicles and energy storage systems, will establish its plant of European production in Germany, as announced at IAA 2019. A module and A state-of-the-art packaging factory and cell factory with a production capacity of 24 GWh will be built at two locations in Saarland in the final expansion stage. A total investment of up to 2 billion euros is planned in Europe. In total, SVOLT aims to create up to 2,000 jobs. In Germany, battery cells and modules and high-voltage storage systems (packs) will be produced.
A reliable partner for the European automotive industry
As a spin-off product of Chinese automaker Great Wall Motors, SVOLT combines systemic knowledge in the field of battery management and systems with extensive experience in the field of vehicle integration. SVOLT can offer its customers tailored solutions at the battery cell, module and high voltage storage system (package) level, as well as the corresponding software.
By taking an integrated approach to vehicle architecture and battery systems, SVOLT supports OEMs in creating safer, highly functional, durable, and cost-effective products that also focus on the needs and expectations of end customers. The company’s comprehensive production portfolio includes high-quality battery cells and their cell chemistry, modules and high-voltage storage systems (packs), as well as battery management systems (BMS) and software solutions.
Research and innovation as an engine for the development of sustainable electromobility
In addition to solutions that meet current market standards, SVOLT is working intensively on the development of new technologies and the continuous development of existing technologies. With two large R&D centers in Baoding and Wuxi, China, and three R&D centers, SVOLT currently employs around half of its 3,000 employees worldwide in research and development alone and registered more than 550 patents in 2019. Among other things, SVOLT is the first company to bring high cobalt nickel cell chemistry to mass production. SVOLT also employs an active research and development team working in the solid state battery area.
Cobalt-free nickel manganese battery cells achieve an energy density comparable to conventional high-nickel cells, but by dispensing with cobalt, they are more sustainable, durable and more economical. The high-tech company plans to launch the first cobalt-free high-nickel battery cells installed in vehicles in mid-2021. The target segment is the mid-range volume market.
Strong local associations
Battery cell production is scheduled to start in late 2023 and be established near the town of Überherrn in Saarland. In its final expansion stage, it will reach a production capacity of 24 GWh, which corresponds to batteries for 300,000 to 500,000 electric cars per year. The module and packaging factory will be implemented at an already industrialized site in Heusweiler, which will be adapted for the production of modules and packaging. Production is expected to start here in mid-2022.
The large-scale project will be implemented in close cooperation between SVOLT, the Saarland Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, Energy and Transport (MWAEV) and Strukturholding Saar GmbH (SHS). With its implementation concept, MWAEV actively participated in the settlement talks and was able to convince SVOLT. SVOLT is commissioning SHS to build the two factories as a turnkey project.
100 GWh production capacity by 2025
SVOLT plans to establish 100 GWh battery cell production capacities around the world by 2025. In addition to the plant in Germany, three plants are planned in the Asia Pacific region with a total installed capacity of 76 GWh. SVOLT opened the first of the four planned cell factories in Jintan, China in November 2019. In addition, several module and package plants are being created, based on customer requirements.
A total investment of 8 billion euros is expected worldwide. The company aims to employ some 10,000 people. At the same time, SVOLT is continually developing its research and development capabilities.
